The Benefits of Discrete Multi-Tone (DMT) Modulation for VDSL Systems

چکیده

The increasing demand for high-bandwidth services such as corporate communications, fast Internet access and digital audio and video delivery presents both a great challenge and a great opportunity. To respond to this challenge, and to take advantage of the opportunity, the telecommunications industry is developing communication equipment based on clever implementations of highly efficient modulation techniques. Most of these efforts are focused on the last mile as this is the bottleneck for providing high performance bandwidth to consumers [1]. Additionally, since the telephone line has the highest penetration rate of all media to consumers, (at last count, over 1 billion [2] lines worldwide), solving the last mile problem implicitly requires that the bandwidth be delivered over telephone lines. This paper discusses DMT's advantages over QAM from the perspectives of performance, flexibility, compatibility, and operational issues, all of which are extremely important to a service provider.

Signal processor implementation of DMT based VDSL modems

The Discrete Multi Tone (DMT) modulation is considered a viable technique for high-speed digital transmission over subscriber loop. It was selected as the standard for ADSL modems and it is also a strong candidate in the VDSL area. This paper investigates a programmable solution for the DMT based VDSL modems using Texas Instrument processor family TMS320C62xx. A structure for both transmitter a...

Adaptive Step-Size Orthogonal Gradient-Based Per-Tone Equalisation in Discrete Multitone Systems

An all-digital implementation of multicarrier modulation called discrete multitone (DMT) modulation has been standardised for asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL), ADSL2, ADSL2+ and VDSL [1][3]. ADSL modems rely on DMT modulation, which divides a broadband channel into many narrowband subchannels and modulated encoded signals onto the narrowband subchannels [4], [5]. With advanced digital ...

Choose Wisely Between QAM and DMT for VDSL

elecommunications operators are responding to the competitive threat of cable and satellite services by offering high-speed applications and converged services to residential and business customers. These applications generally require minimum duplex bit rates in the range of 5 to 6 Mbits/second—both upstream and downstream (symmetric). While there are several digital subscriber line (DSL) tech...

Discrete Multi-Tone Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line

This paper describes discrete multi-tone (DMT) line coding, which has become the standard asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) modulation technique as selected by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) T1E1 committee. Presented here is an overview of DMT ADSL including quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) encoding, rate-adaptation, bitswapping as well as some of the overall adva...

A Reduced-Complexity Fast Algorithm for Software Implementation of the IFFT/FFT in DMT Systems

The discrete multitone (DMT) modulation/demodulation scheme is the standard transmission technique in the application of asymmetric digital subscriber lines (ADSL) and very-high-speed digital subscriber lines (VDSL). Although the DMT can achieve higher data rate compared with other modulation/demodulation schemes, its computational complexity is too high for costefficient implementations. For e...
